Kick Your Career Up a Notch!
Boost Production With Five Subtle Ingredients for Success
By Julia Escobar, ProspectsPLUS! Director of Corporate Marketing
In a tough market, kicking your career into high gear involves well-worn strategies such as realistic pricing, open houses and marketing campaigns. Savvy agents, however, know that the key to dishing
up consistently high production lies in some not-so-noticeable
solutions, as well.
Here are five strategies you can take to heart and put into action to accelerate your production today:
1. Associate with positive people.
The fastest way to bring down your
day, your mood and, consequently,
your production is to hang around with negative agents and influences that
drain your energy and steal your ability to produce at a superstar level.
Don't fall into fast traps such as "the market is bad, so I can't get ahead; the printer ran out of ink, so I can't create a CMA; the office manager bought the wrong color paper clips, so I might as well go home" type of self-defeating mentalities.
The only way to enjoy each day, build forward momentum and skyrocket your career is to align yourself with top producers who have winning attitudes and mindsets each and every day. Like attracts like. What do you want to attract in your life, positive success or negative failure? The choice is yours.
2. Fine-tune your skills. Honing your skills sharpens your competitive edge in two ways. The first is obvious: Skill building is vital to keeping pace with today's well-informed consumers and highly motivated
agent pool.
The second, while more subtle, is just as important: Knowing beyond a doubt that you have the skills, tools and techniques to face every day and every situation instills confidence that radiates through all that you do and all that you are. It is the characteristic that makes prospects want to list and sell with you—and makes fellow agents feel good about passing referrals your way.
3. Put your life in balance. The current market climate and competition all but ensure that you will have stressful days and harried workloads. Balance is the pressure valve that allows you to succeed not only in the short term, but also throughout your career.
Map out your family and personal time as diligently as you would your business hours. Give your family what Floyd Wickman calls the "countables" that they need to be supportive and happy. Floyd describes "countables" as those things that your family can always count on—whether it's Sunday dinner each week, game night every Thursday, attending your child's sporting events or a combination of these. Knowing that you are taking much-needed downtime and meeting your family commitments gives you the guilt-free opportunity to decompress. For that, there simply is no substitute!
4. Remember to give. Whether or not you subscribe to the "what goes around comes around" philosophy, there is no denying that top producers in this and every industry historically are compellingly generous. They lead by example and understand that we, as human beings, truly do "get by giving." Or, in the words of Zig Ziglar, "You will get everything in life you want if you help enough other people get what they want."
Magic happens when we reach out to those around us. Whether you make a financial contribution to a charity dear to your heart, mentor a child or take a new agent under your wing to create a smoother path for their success, you are a better person for it. Never underestimate the power of giving; our world can always use a little more generosity.
5. Take care of yourself. Stress can be a double-edged sword—at times a driving motivator, at times a crushing weakness.
Take care of yourself first. Get up, get out there and exercise! You don't have to start with a marathon, you just have to start. Spend 20 minutes each day preserving your life by walking, running, biking or swimming. Anything that gets you away from the stress and into a routine promotes a long and happy life. Play tag with your kids, walk the dogs, or remove whatever is hanging on the treadmill in the corner and get going while you watch the evening news.
Just like a professional athlete, if you are in the game to win, you need to bring your best self to the playing field. Caring for your health gives you a lifetime advantage of physical and mental clarity.
Whether you are looking to kick-start your career or simply want to give it a boost during these challenging times, you can't go wrong by peppering your days with these essential ingredients for a happy, healthy business and life.
